How to export your inline comments as Word comments in Obsidian

As of October 2026, Obsidian hides %% comments in Reading view; its help does not describe native Word comment export. For a small draft, copy the prose and add comments manually in your document editor. Word Comment Export builds a DOCX from supported note text and inline comments.

Background

You review a prose draft in Obsidian and need to share its inline comments through a DOCX file. Write a review comment immediately after the word it concerns. Word Comment Export turns supported %% comments into native comments in a new DOCX file.

3 ways to do it

  1. Keep comments beside your draft

Obsidian supports inline comments wrapped in %%. They remain visible in Editing view and disappear in Reading view, so you can review the annotated note there.

    limits
This keeps the review in Obsidian. It does not create a DOCX with native document comments.
  2. Add the comments manually in Word

Copy your prose into Word, then select an anchor and use Review, then New Comment. Enter the review comment there.

    limits
You must recreate each comment and choose its anchor yourself.
  3. Word Comment Export from this site

Write a review comment immediately after the word it concerns. Word Comment Export turns supported %% comments into native comments in a new DOCX file.

    limits
Free export supports plain paragraphs and headings; unsupported Markdown stops export instead of being skipped.
A notice gives the new DOCX path and comment count beside the unchanged grant proposal note.

Do the job with Word Comment Export

  1. Open a note in the editor with an inline comment after its anchor word.

  2. Run Export the active note to a docx file.

  3. Read the preview and correct any unsupported text it lists.

  4. Check the author, select Export, and find the new DOCX beside your note.

Common questions

Why can’t my comment start the paragraph?

A native comment needs an anchor word in this export. Put the comment immediately after the word it concerns.

Can I export a draft with a list?

Lists are unsupported and stop the preview. Prepare a separate supported prose draft if you need this export.
