How to solve an equation and insert the result as math in Obsidian

As of October 2026, Obsidian documents MathJax rendering for equations, rather than a symbolic solve command. You can rearrange an equation yourself and type the result as math. Pocket Symbolic Solver adds a local solver and an insertion preview.

Background

You write algebra or physics notes and want to rearrange an equation without leaving the editor. Select F=m*a and solve for a. Pocket Symbolic Solver shows the result before you insert it as display math.

2 ways to do it

  1. Write the result as MathJax

Obsidian renders LaTeX math enclosed in dollar signs. Rearrange your equation yourself, then write the result using display math.

    limits
Rendering shows the expression you supply. This route leaves the algebra to you.
  2. Pocket Symbolic Solver from this site

Select F=m*a and solve for a. Pocket Symbolic Solver shows the result before you insert it as display math.

    limits
The solver accepts nerdamer syntax, not LaTeX input, systems of equations or inequalities.
    A note after two inserts: a = F over m and t = minus u minus v over a, as display math.

Do the job with Pocket Symbolic Solver

  1. Select an equation such as F=m*a in your note.

  2. Run Solve an equation for a symbol.

  3. Enter a as the symbol and select Solve.

  4. Check the rendered solution, then select Insert or cancel the preview.

Common questions

Why does my answer look different?

The solver chooses an algebraic form. Check whether it is equivalent to your expected result before inserting it.

Can I keep the original equation?

Insert replaces selected text. Clear the selection and place the cursor where you want the result instead.
