How to edit spaces in Obsidian inline math

As of October 2026, Obsidian accepts inline math between dollar signs. Steady Inline Math guards an eligible equation during editing, but cleanup keeps your typed spaces.

Background

The guard protects your active edit. Check the source after leaving the equation, because a saved boundary space can still affect rendering.

2 ways to do it

  1. Edit the final expression directly

Write inline LaTeX between dollar signs. For a small correction, edit the expression directly and check its rendered result.

    limits
This does not add the temporary editing guard supplied by Steady Inline Math.
  2. Steady Inline Math from this site

Put your caret inside an inline equation in a plain paragraph. The plugin adds hidden temporary braces so spaces stay inside the active equation.

    limits
The guard runs only in Live Preview plain paragraphs with one caret.
The math practice paragraph remains after the caret leaves its equation.

Keep inline equations in math mode while editing spaces

  1. Open a Markdown note in Live Preview.

  2. Write a short inline equation in a plain paragraph.

  3. Place one caret inside a dollar sign and type a space.

  4. Move the caret into the paragraph to remove temporary braces.

  5. Remove boundary spaces yourself if the final equation needs them removed.

Common questions

Why does the guard skip my list item?

Lists and callouts are outside this version’s supported contexts. Try the equation in a plain paragraph with one caret.

What does the equation panel show?

The Pro panel lists eligible equation source and line numbers. It uses the same paragraph scanner as the guard.
