How to convert task fields between emoji and Dataview syntax

As of October 2026, Tasks supports emoji and Dataview task formats. Changing its format setting does not migrate existing tasks. Edit task fields manually or preview supported changes with Task Format Bridge.

Background

Task metadata can use symbols or bracketed text fields. A format change needs both suitable note text and the matching Tasks setting if you use Tasks.

2 ways to do it

  1. Edit bracketed fields manually

For a due date, write a field such as [due:: 2026-10-21] on the task line. Tasks also reads bracketed date fields in parentheses.

    limits
You must check dates and remove the old field yourself. Tasks documents limits to its Dataview format support.
  2. Task Format Bridge from this site

Run a free preview for the active note, inspect replacements and warnings, then apply the supported changes. Pro can identify convertible lines across a folder. Tested on desktop only.

    limits
The converter handles supported trailing fields and leaves uncertain lines unchanged. It does not change your Tasks format setting or batch-write a folder.
The preview lists one convertible task and warnings for invalid, duplicate and unsupported fields.

  1. Open the note you want to convert.

  2. Run Preview note as Dataview fields or Preview note as emoji fields.

  3. Read the replacements and skipped-line warnings.

  4. Select Apply conversion.

  5. Check the format setting separately if you use Tasks.

Common questions

Can I convert a task with a time beside its date?

Timed dates fall outside this converter. The line stays unchanged when its field value is unsupported. Review it manually.

Will converting a field also change its task status?

No. The converter keeps the task prefix, including the checkbox status. It changes only supported trailing fields.

What if I need to undo the conversion?

The plugin applies the note changes in one editor transaction. Use editor undo in that note to reverse the conversion.
