How to record observed changes to your note properties in Obsidian

As of October 2026, Obsidian properties hold current values, while File recovery keeps note snapshots that you can compare. Use snapshots for occasional review or keep a manual log. Property Change Ledger records selected property transitions observed while this device has the vault open.

Background

You track project status or due dates and need a record of changes observed on this device. Choose a folder and the property keys you want to watch. Property Change Ledger records later observed changes with their old values and UTC times.

2 ways to do it

  1. Compare File recovery snapshots

Open File recovery in settings, find the note, and select a snapshot. Turn on Show changes to inspect differences between snapshots.

    limits
Snapshots capture whole notes at intervals. They do not give you this plugin’s ledger of selected property transitions.
  2. Property Change Ledger from this site

Choose a folder and the property keys you want to watch. Property Change Ledger records later observed changes with their old values and UTC times.

    limits
The ledger cannot recover property transitions that happened while the app was closed.
Recent records filtered to a project and its status key.

Do the job with Property Change Ledger

  1. Run Set the folder and keys to watch.

  2. Enter your folder, exact keys and ledger path, then select Save watch.

  3. Edit a selected property after the baseline starts.

  4. Run Show recent property changes and filter by note or key.

Common questions

Should I rename status to another key?

Watch the exact key you use in your notes. The Pro status counts specifically require status.

Why is the first value missing from history?

The first observed value establishes a baseline. A later observed change produces the transition record.
