How to turn session edits into a CriticMarkup review note in Obsidian

As of October 2026, Obsidian File recovery lets you compare note snapshots and copy a saved version. For a separate editorial review, you can mark changes manually with CriticMarkup. Revision Session Marks compares a saved prose baseline with the later text and writes a marked review copy.

Background

You revise plain prose and want a separate review showing changes since a saved writing baseline. Save your draft before a writing session, then edit the same note. Revision Session Marks compares the texts and writes a separate CriticMarkup review.

3 ways to do it

  1. Compare saved note snapshots

Use File recovery to find snapshots of your note. Show changes displays added, removed or modified content, and Copy lets you keep a saved version separately.

    limits
Snapshot times follow the recovery settings. They may not match the beginning and end of your writing session.
  2. Mark a review manually

CriticMarkup has plain text marks for additions, deletions and substitutions. Keep an original copy and mark the revised text yourself.

    limits
You must identify and mark the changes yourself. The syntax alone does not check the original and revised texts.
  3. Revision Session Marks from this site

Save your draft before a writing session, then edit the same note. Revision Session Marks compares the texts and writes a separate CriticMarkup review.

    limits
This version accepts plain prose and rejects headings, frontmatter, links, code, emphasis and other unsupported markup.

Do the job with Revision Session Marks

  1. Open a plain prose draft in an editor.

  2. Run Start a writing session to save its baseline.

  3. Edit the same note.

  4. Run Stop session and create a review note, then inspect the dialog and open the new review.

Common questions

Does a stopped comparison erase the baseline?

Unsupported input and comparison limits keep the baseline. Correct the problem and try the same session again.

Can the review accept edits into my source?

The restore checks verify the generated text. They do not apply review decisions to your source note.
