How to show headings from embedded notes in the Obsidian outline
The core Outline can't show them, as of October 2026. The help page says Outline lists the headings in the active note, and forum posts up to January 2026 confirm embeds add none. People get by with a heading above each embed, a symbol list in a switcher, or a second outline panel from a plugin.

Background
The request is five years old. A forum user opened "Outline plugin should include headers from embedded markdown files" on 2021-07-20, and it has 43 likes and 21 posts. The case was an overview note built from many short notes, where the outline shows only the overview's own headings.
Two related requests are still open. "Show callout heading in outline" has 24 likes and 13 posts since 2022-04-13. "Show headings that are inside bullet lists in Outline view" has 35 likes and 13 posts since 2023-05-17.
4 ways to do it
A heading of your own above each embed
Type a heading in the host note above each embed. The core Outline lists that heading, and a click on it takes you to that spot.
Several people in the thread do this. One called the extra headings redundant in February 2023, and another reported duplicate headings in January 2026.
limits
You get one row for each embed and none of the headings inside it. You type each heading by hand, and you rename it by hand when the embedded note changes.
Quick Switcher++ is a community plugin with a symbol mode. Its README says the mode lists the headings, links, embeds and callouts of a file, indented under the heading before them.
A forum poster showed it in May 2024. Each embedded note had its own entry in the list, so every embed was one jump away.
limits
The list lives in the switcher window, not in a sidebar panel. The post shows an entry for the embed itself, not the headings inside the embedded note.
Multiple Notes Outline is a community plugin with a File View. Its README says the view lists the outline of the active file. Below it come the outlines of the files it links to and of its backlink files.
The changelog for version 0.5.0 says embedded links are treated as link elements in an outline.
limits
The README describes a list of outlines, one for each file. It doesn't say whether an embedded note counts as a linked file, and the latest release is from April 2024.
Embed Outline is a second outline panel in the right sidebar. Each embed gets a row with the name of the embedded note, and that note's headings sit under it with their own levels.
Callout titles and headings written inside list items are rows too. Click a heading from an embedded note and the note scrolls to the embed, then to that heading. All of that is free.
limits
The free outline opens the embeds of the note itself, and an embed inside an embedded note shows as a locked row. Pro opens those down to 5 levels.
Install Embed Outline from Community plugins and turn it on. The outline gets a tab in the right sidebar.
Open a note that embeds other notes.
Select the Embed outline tab, or run the command Open the outline panel.
Click a row to go to it. Hold Ctrl, or Cmd on macOS, and click a row from an embedded note to open that note in a new tab.
An embed inside an embedded note shows as a locked row. Opening it needs Pro, and so do word counts.
Common questions
Does the core Outline show callout titles?
No, as of October 2026. The help page says Outline lists headings, and the forum request for callout titles still gets new posts in September 2026. Quick Switcher++ names callouts in its symbol list, and Embed Outline shows them as rows.
Why doesn't a heading inside a list item show in the outline?
The core Outline leaves it out, and the request to add it has been open since May 2023. A moderator there pointed out that CommonMark allows headings in list items. The poster tried the Outliner plugin and reported that it doesn't add them. Embed Outline lists them, and a setting turns that off.
Which level does a heading from an embedded note get?
A poster asked this in July 2022, because an embed can sit in the middle of a section. Embed Outline puts a row for the embed under the heading that holds it. The embedded note's headings go below that row and keep their own levels.
What happens when two notes embed each other?
The thread raised this case in May 2024. Embed Outline stops at 400 notes and 5,000 rows, so a loop can't freeze the app. Without Pro the looping embed is left out of the outline. With Pro it shows as a broken embed.
Right-click the heading and choose Rename this heading. Obsidian then updates every link to that heading. If you just type over the heading text, the links keep the old text, as of October 2026, unless a community plugin updates them.
Core search has no operator for the created or modified date, as of October 2026. It can sort results by either time, and it can match a date written in a file name, the text or a property. For a real date filter you use a base, a Dataview query or a search plugin.
