How to import a Daylio backup into Obsidian

As of October 2026, you can write journal entries as Markdown notes. Daylio Backup Import reads Android schema version 15 and creates notes with source IDs and referenced photos.

Background

Keep the backup until you have checked the imported notes and photos. The plugin’s tests used synthetic Android version 15 data.

3 ways to do it

  1. Transfer selected entries by hand

For a few entries, copy their text into Markdown notes. Separate paragraphs with blank lines and add headings where useful.

    limits
You handle dates, moods, activities and photos separately.
  2. Obsidian Daylio Parser for CSV exports

This Python tool reads Daylio CSV exports and creates one Markdown file per day. It groups entries into year and month folders.

    limits
It requires Python 3.10 or later and expects CSV rather than a .daylio archive. Its README reports silent overwrites and lost same-time entries.
  3. Daylio Backup Import from this site

Select a local Android Daylio backup using schema version 15. Preview its entries and media reports before creating notes keyed by source ID.

    limits
The importer reads Android schema version 15 only.
An imported Daylio entry shows mood and activity properties above a photo.

Convert an Android Daylio backup into entry notes

  1. Make a local Android Daylio backup and copy it to your Obsidian device.

  2. Run Import a Daylio backup and select the file.

  3. Check the folder, entry counts and media reports.

  4. After changing a folder or Pro option, select Preview again.

  5. Select Create notes, then inspect an imported note and its photo.

Common questions

Why does the default file name contain an ID?

The source ID distinguishes entries with the same title and time. A Pro file name rule must keep the ID token too.

Can I group entries in a daily note?

Pro adds linked lines under a named daily-note section. Those lines carry source block IDs so a repeat import can skip duplicate lines.
