About Shared TeX Preamble

You write math across several notes and want one place to keep your TeX commands.

Select a macro file in your vault to load its definitions into the math engine. Your notes use those commands without copies of the definitions.

Reload the shared macros, read two math notes, switch to the Physics library and preview the Draft libraryPlay demo

Free features

One macro file for the whole vault

Choose a Markdown, TeX or style file in your vault. The plugin reads supported command definitions and loads them at startup.

The same commands in each note

Definitions go into the math engine without changing your note files. Someone reading a shared note needs the macro file too.

Reload with a command

Run Reload the macro file after editing definitions. The command refreshes open Reading views and reports the loaded definitions.

Notices for problems

Notices identify missing files, empty files and definition errors. Package or file-loading commands reject the whole file before the engine receives it.

Pro features

Pro costs $5 a month or $15 one time through GitHub Sponsors. One sponsorship turns on Pro in every plugin that has it.

Named macro libraries Pro

Save a name and file for each library, then select the active library in settings or with a command.

Library preview with errors Pro

Preview definitions with line numbers, argument counts, sample calls and results. The preview expands samples without adding definitions to the engine.

Set up Shared TeX Preamble

needs

  • Obsidian 1.13.4 or later

steps

  1. Create Macros.md with your definitions in a display math block.

  2. Select that note in the Macro file setting.

  3. Use a defined command in math in another note.

  4. After editing the file, run Reload the macro file.

If the app can't find a new plugin yet, try again later. Obsidian says a plugin that passes the review shows in the app within 24 hours.

Questions about Shared TeX Preamble

Does reloading update Live Preview?

Reload refreshes Reading views only. A Live Preview formula can keep its previous drawing until Obsidian redraws it.

What happens when I delete a macro?

The math engine keeps loaded definitions until you restart Obsidian. Switching libraries can also leave old commands available for that session.

Can I load LaTeX packages?

The plugin rejects files with package or file-loading commands. It supports macro definitions rather than full LaTeX documents.

Network use

Before you select Sign in with GitHub, the plugin makes no network requests. Sign-in sends its client ID, the read:user scope and device-flow data to github.com, then sends an authenticated sponsorship query to api.github.com. Checks reuse success for 7 days, retry failures after 6 hours or run on Refresh; they send no vault data.
