How to import Note Station NSX backups into Obsidian

As of October 2026, Obsidian reads Markdown notes, so a Note Station NSX backup needs conversion. Use Note Station NSX Import in your vault or Jimmy outside it, keeping the original backup for checks.

Background

An NSX backup contains note records and asset members that need matching. The importer uses source attachment hashes and reports missing assets or unresolved links.

2 ways to do it

  1. Convert with Jimmy outside the vault

Install Jimmy and follow its Synology Note Station instructions to convert your NSX backup to Markdown. Move the generated Markdown files into your vault after checking the output. Obsidian documents importing Markdown files.

    limits
Jimmy documents that inline charts are not converted. This route uses a separate command-line tool.
  2. Note Station NSX Import from this site

Choose a local backup and preview the counts before creating files. Notebook folders, note properties and local assets go into a new root folder with a report.

    limits
Encrypted notes are not decrypted, and complex charts and tables need review. Saved mappings and later backup comparison need Pro.

Transfer a local Note Station backup

  1. Export an NSX backup from Note Station and keep a copy.

  2. Run Import a local NSX archive from the command palette.

  3. Select the backup and check the preview counts.

  4. Enter a new root folder name and review notebook folder choices.

  5. Select Create new files, then inspect the report, notes and assets.

Common questions

What happens when a note has no matching notebook?

It goes into an Unfiled folder. The report names the missing notebook reference.

Will comparison detect changed attachment bytes?

No. Comparison checks exported source note records, and the review copies asset members from the later backup.
