How to move Longform chapters with their scenes

As of October 2026, Longform organizes scenes through a project index and offers a reorderable, nestable scene list. For a checked move with descendants, Scene Subtree Mover previews the result and backs up the source before applying.

Background

Longform issue 161 asks for moving a parent with its children, including into another parent. Scene Subtree Mover previews that move, either within a sibling group or under another parent.

3 ways to do it

  1. Use Longform’s scene organizer

Longform provides a reorderable, nestable scene list and commands for scene structure. Use its organizer when you want to manage the manuscript within Longform.

    limits
The README does not establish that a parent move carries its descendants. Check the resulting order before relying on that behavior.
  2. Edit a copy of the index

Longform tracks scene order in the index frontmatter and supports direct edits. Keep a copy first, and move the parent entry with its following child array as described in the plugin README.

    limits
Longform warns that editing its frontmatter directly makes it easy to mess things up. This route gives you no plugin preview or checked write.
  3. Scene Subtree Mover from this site

Select a scene, a destination parent and its final position, review the complete proposed tree, then apply. The operation creates a full source backup before the checked index update.

    limits
The free version previews one move at a time. Later sync writes are outside the source check.
The completed manuscript update displays the full source backup path below the order.

Use Scene Subtree Mover

  1. Open your manuscript index.

  2. Run Move a chapter with its scenes from the command palette.

  3. Select the chapter, destination parent and final position within that group.

  4. Select Preview move and check both order panels.

  5. Select Back up and apply, then keep the reported backup.

Common questions

Should I choose the position before or after the move?

Choose the final numbered position within the destination group. Position three places that scene third in the resulting order.

Can a saved order replace my source backup?

A saved order keeps a sequence and requires matching scenes and parent relationships. The source backup preserves the original text, including comments and body edits.

What should I do after an index conflict?

Close the preview and inspect the current index. Run the command again to read a fresh source before proposing another move.
